I was approached by the Burton and Lichfield Chamber of Commerce to write a blog about Autism in the Workplace.

The blog’s purpose is to provide businesses a brief insight into the autistic condition and the relevance of this within a working environment. Autism is considered as a disability under the Equality Act 2010 and as such reasonable adjustments must be made in order to comply with this legislation.

Without a detailed understanding of the specific requirements of each autistic individual and the skills required to effectively communicate with autistic people, then full compliance with the Equality Act 2010 may be difficult to achieve.

Sally Pepper:

A Derby man living with autism is urging people to support those with the condition as we head back to work and a sense of normality. Andrew [Warneken 00:00:10] says, going back to the office means you could be sitting at a different desk and be following a complete change of routine to the one you’ve had whilst working from home. Heading to the shops and wearing a mask can also cause distress for those living with the condition. So what can we do to help?

Sally Pepper:

Well, Andrew joins me now. Andrew, good morning.

Andrew Warneken:
